Dyeing yarn - My experiment - part 2

Part 1

Experiment #2: 142 gr skein, about 4.4 yds / 4 m total circumference of natural/undyed cone yarn, 50% wool / 50% silk, about 317 yds / 285 m in 100 gr.

Эксперимент №2: 142 гр. бобинной пряжи (50% шерсть, 50% шелк, метраж около 285 м в 100 гр.) в пасме с длиной окружности около 4 метров.

Step 1: Yarn skein was held double.  At first, submerge into bowl with colorant about 1/4 of the skein length. Wait about 1 minute. Then submerge the next 1/4 of the skein length (we have 1/2 of skein length in colorant).

Шаг 1: Пасма сложена вдвое. Погрузите в емкость с красителем около 1/4 длины пасмы. Подождите 1 минуту. Затем погрузите еще 1/4 длины пасмы (т.е. в красителе уже 1/2 всей пасмы).

3 packs of Blue raspberry lemonade Kool-Aid

Do the same with the 3/4-d and the last part of the skein.
So we have skein with ombre color effect. (Next time I'll add more packs of Kool-Aid for deeper color).

Продолжайте так же с 3/4-ю и последней четвертью пасмы. Получаем пряжу с эффектом омбре (градиент). (В следующий раз я бы добавила больше упаковок Kool-Aid для более насыщеного цвета. Но у ж сколько было в наличии...).

Step 2: The same as step 1. But skein was submerged into colorant in reverse order.

Шаг 2: Те же операции как и в шаге 1, но пасма погружалась в краситель с другой стороны (начиная со светлого участка).

Dyeing yarn - My experiment - part 1

A few words about my first try in dyeing yarn with Kool-Aid drink mix (in short notes mode).

I've decided to make this notes for me for future attempts and for anyone who find this information helpful.

В нескольких словах о моем первом эксперименте в окраске пряжи с помощью растворимого напитка Kool-Aid (кратко, в виде заметок). Я решила написать эти заметки и для себя для будующих попыток, и для всех кому эта информация окажется полезной.

Rewind yarn into long skeins using Niddy-noddy or home furniture ... chair and sofa :))) Don't forget to loosely tie the skein with waste cotton yarn every 18-20" / about 50 cm to prevent tangling.

Перемотайте пряжу в длинную пасму с помощью Niddy-noddy или мебели... стула или дивана :))) Не забудьте свободно перевязать пасму кусочками ненужной хлопковой пряжи через каждые 50 см чтобы предотвратить спутывание.

Kool-Aid works only on animal fibers. 

Color of a pure wool yarn will be deeper than color of wool blend yarn with the same amount of colorant. The amount of water doesn't matter but it should be enough to cover the skein in bowl.
It's important to wait until colorant powder dissolve in the water well.

Kool-Aid окрашивает только волокна животного происхождения.
Цвет 100% шерсти будет более насыщеным, чем шерсти с добавками при одинаковом количестве красителя. Количество воды не имеет значения, но ее должно быть достаточно, чтобы покрыть всю пряжу.
Важно хорошо растворить краситель в воде.

Average Kool-Aid amount is about 1 pack per 1 oz / 28 gr of yarn (less Kool-Aid for lighter colors, more for darker colors).
Среднее количество Kool-Aidа - около 1 упаковки на 28-30 грамм пряжи. (меньше красителя для более светлого оттенка, больше - для более темного).

Preparing yarn:  wash yarn with mild detergent, no vinegar (Kool-Aid contains citric acid).
Подготовка пряжи: постирайте пряжу с мягким моющим средством, уксус не нужен, т.к. напиток содержит лимонную кислоту.

Experiment #1: 163 gr skein, about 2.2 yds / 2 m  circle length of natural/undyed cone yarn, 50% wool / 50% silk, about 317 yds / 285 m in 100 gr.

I'm not happy with result: too light colors because of small amount of colorant and only 50% wool yarn. Decided to overdye the skein with 3 packs of Cherry Kool-Aid.

Результат мне не понравился: очень светлые цвета из-за мальнького количества красителя и смесовой пряжи.
Сразу решила перекрасить пряжу 3-мя упаковками Kool-Aid Вишня.

For setting the dye, heat bowl with yarn in microwave for two minutes. Repeat it several times until water become mostly clear. Let the yarn to cool then rinse it in water the same temperature as the yarn to prevent felting.  Wash with soap, rinse, hang to dry.

Для закрепления цвета нагревайте емкость с пряжей в микроволновке около 2-х минут. Повторяйте нагрев несколько раз пока вода не станет практичести прозрачной. Остудите пряжу затем прополоскайте в воде той же температуры что и пряжа для предотвращения сваливания.
Постирайте с мылом, прополоскайте , развесьте сушить.

The overdyed skein of yarn has a 2 undertones: coral pink (cherry over orange) and  watermelon  pink (cherry over light yellow).

Перекрашеная пряжа имеет 2 оттенка: коралловый (вишня поверх апельсина / оранжевого) и арбузный (вишня поверх лимонада / светло-желтого).

Much better then it was :)
По-моему, так намного лучше, чем было :)

Size: S

Yarn: 400 gr = 920yds / 841m) of Elann Sonata, DK / 8 ply, 50 g = 115yds / 105m, 100% Cotton

Needles:  US 4 - 3.5 mm, US 2½ - 3.0 mm

Mods: 

1.  Longer body (but it still isn't long enough for me...)

2. Neckline BO starting on 2 pattern lines lower than mentioned in the pattern (as usual front and back necklines are the same in Kim’s patterns)

Stitch pattern is too stretchy in all directions and jumping up like crazy.  

Aggressive blocking and steaming helps ... for 1 hour :)))

Спицы:  3.5 мм, 3.0 мм

Изменения: 

1.  Удиненное тело ( но мне все равно коротковато...)

2. Вырез горловины на 2 полосы узора ниже, чем в описании (как обычно, в дизайнах Ким высота горловины спинки и переда одинаковые)

Ажурный узор очень тянется во всех направлениях и подпрыгивает вверх. Агрессивная блокировка и отпаривание помогаю где-то на 1 час :)))  

Надо было бы длинее, но переделывать уже не буду.

Needles: US 5 - 3.75 mm
